Medical Director
Summary of Job Purpose and Function
The Medical Director (MD) is responsible for ensuring ! high quality medicine and an outstanding client experience in each of the hospitals that they supervise. They will achieve this goal through recruiting, hiring, coaching and supervising veterinarians and by working with field directors to ensure the presence of outstanding paraprofessional teams. In addition, Medical Directors partner with field staff to ensure outstanding business practices and a high degree of professionalism in each hospital. Medical Directors are expected to teach medical and surgical skills and to evaluate performance through frequent visits to hospitals.
Essential Responsibilities and Tasks
Participate in the recruitment, hiring, coaching and supervision of doctors in their hospitals.
Develop, implement and oversee on-boarding plans for all new doctors in their hospitals.
Work side by side with doctors in hospitals (typically four days per week) in order to:
o Gauge an individual doctor's skills and abiliti! es; and
o Provide full review of at least three medic! al cases for a doctor during each visit.
Teach and coach high performance skills including:
o Surgery (scrubbed-in and performing surgeries alongside their doctors);
o Diagnostic work-ups (reviewing current and historical cases alongside their doctors);
o Communication with clients and staff (observing, assisting, conflict resolution and coaching on observed interactions
in the exam room
and throughout the hospital);
o Proper medical record documentation (reviewing current and historic medical records alongside doctors);
o Proper, legal regulatory compliance, including controlled substances; and
o Charging appropriately for services.
Conduct a formal review of all doctors at least once a year or more frequently if required.
Develop a developmental plan for each doctor in their hospitals at least once a year or more frequently if required.
Address and correct issues ! affecting the quality of medicine delivered in hospitals to ensure that Pets are treated appropriately and consistently with Banfield Standards.
Teach doctors how to become better doctors, teachers, leaders, and mentors which includes helping doctors learn the skills needed to selectively interview and effectively communicate with other doctors.
Train doctors to develop and maintain a productive and successful paraprofessional team
Actively participate in local, state, and national veterinary organizations. Cultivate relationships within the profession to promote a positive image of the practice and to develop a strong network. Encourage your doctors to do the same.
Cultivate healthy and productive relationships with veterinary schools. Build mutually beneficial partnerships with deans, faculty, and students that result in Banfield being considered the premier practice for student programs and the employer of choice for new graduates.
Provide medical consultation for the doctors in their market and ! on the weekend on-call rotation.

Medical and surgical skills - Consistently practice veterinary medicine above commonly accepted practice standards. Ability to perform common general practice surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Demonstrate these skills confidently and with the intent to teach them.
Sales and marketing skills - Help doctors to gain client compliance in delivering treatment plans to Pets.

Special Working Conditions
Ability to work at a computer for long periods of time.
Ability to be confident around companion Pets (i.e., dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, etc.).
Client needs and work volume may often require more than 40 hours per week to complete essential duties of this job. This position requires special hours including working weekends and evenings.
Must have mental processes for reasoning, remembering, mathematics and language ability (reading, writing, and speaking the English language) to perform the duties proficiently.
The noise level in the work environment is moderately high.
Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to solve problems involving several variables.
Requires sufficient ambulatory skills in order to perform duties while at hospital.
Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, ! carry, and move) up to 50 pounds.
Requires good hand-eye coordination, finger-hand-arm dexterity with the ability to reach and grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of Pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances.
Must be able to travel long distances by air, train or car on short notice for extended periods of time. Must meet age requirements of national car rental agencies and have reliable private transportation for frequent local travel including a valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
Ability to establish and maintain a home office if necessary.
Banfield policies and protocols are n! ot intended to supersede the associate's legal responsibilities and med! ical judgment. In the event of a conflict, applicable laws and regulations will control.
Experience, Education and/or Training
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD), or equivalent foreign degree is required.
A minimum of five (5) years of relevant professional experience, including at least three (3) years clinical, with proven ability to perform all basic surgeries, including use of all standard medical instruments and equipment, and two (2) years leadership experience (such as a hospital manager, chief of staff, partner doctor or equivalent role).
An active veterinary license in good standing is required for the states in which the majority of the MD's hospitals exist.
Federal DEA license required; and, if necessary, DEA license for primary state, as well.
For any additional states where the MD has hospitals at the time of hire, or if a new territory is acquired, necessary licenses must be obtained at the next availa! ble licensing date.
All licenses must remain active for each state in which the Medical Director has hospital responsibility.
