Background and-or Security Investigation required DUTIES:
The ! Dental Assistant will work within the Dental Service for the G! ulf coast Veterans Health Care system. The Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System includes Biloxi, MS; Mobile, AL; Eglin, FL; Panama City, FL; and Pensacola, FL. The primary location for this position will be at the Biloxi location; however, incumbent may be required to occasionally travel to other facility within the Health Care System when needed to accommodate work load. Duties include but not limited to:
Provide assistance to customers with questions or concerns provides service recovery.
Setup operatory and/or surgery suite for planned dental procedure and cleans dental unit for turnover.
Accomplish all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols.
Assist in specialized dental procedures, such as oral surgery, endodontic, periodontics, prosthodontics, implant placement and restoration.
Expose both standard and specialty dental imaging (i.e.TMJ, ceph, cone beam) in traditional and/or digital formats.!
Disinfect oral appliances to prevent cross contamination.
Properly prepare instrument for transfer to SPD for sterilization.
Follow all Standard Operating Procedures for Reusable Medical Equipment.
Assist in filling gaps in doctor's schedule due to late cancellations and failed appointments.
Assist dentist in charting finding and treatment plans in patient records.
Maintains patient confidentially per HIPAA with written and verbal information.
Monitor patient condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress.
Pour impressions and prepare study models.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Pro! ficiency. Dental Assistants must be proficient in spoken and written En! glish.
Certification of Radiologic Competence. Non-certified applicants may be given temporary appointments as graduate Dental Assistants, but must receive certification within time frame to become permanent.
Experience/Education. Must possess six month of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of a Dental Assistant or provides familiarity with the work of a Dental Assistant. OR Successfully completed 1-year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission. OR Combination of experience and education.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies. In addition, to must demonstrate the following technical KSA's.
1. Ability to identify normal oral anatomy.
! 2. Advanced knowledge of instruments, materials, and standardized dental procedures used in all phases of restorative, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal care and procedures.
3. Ability to monitor and perform basic interpretation of vital signs.
4. Ability to independently provide procedure-specific patient education and appropriate referral of patient concerns to treating dentist.
5. Ability to capture standard and special dental images of good diagnostic quality in traditional or digital formats.
6. Ability to perform maintenance on dental equipment used for routine and specialty dentistry.
7. Ability to enter and retrieve data utilizing electronic dental records.
8. Ability to perform dental assistant appropriate laboratory procedures.
