DUTIES: The Dental Assistant assists the dentist in many aspects of direct patient care and performs other clinical and clerical functions independently of direct supervision.
The incumbent will set up operatory for planned dental procedures and cleans dental unit for timely turnover.
Keeps operative field clear of debris and retracts oral tissues effectively and comfortably.
Prepares dental medicaments and impression materials per manufacturer's instructions.
Assists in specialized dental procedures , such as oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, and other routine general dental procedures.
Accomplishes all intra-operative procedures within standard infection control protocols.
Assist dentist in charting findings and treatment plans in CPRS. !
Schedule patient appointments and assists in filling in gaps in the! doctor's schedule due to late cancellations and failed appointments.
Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPPA with written and verbal information.
Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail. Uses the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VISTA), Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), and Dental Record Manager Plus (DRM+) to access information in the facility computer system.
In addition, the incumbent will provide assistance to customers with questions or concerns, and service recovery. Monitors patient's condition during treatment, being alert for signs of physical distress. Provides direct patient care, i.e., suture removal, coronal polishing of teeth, impressions for diagnostic casts and preliminary imp! ressions for prosthetic fabrication. The dental assistant informs the Administrative Officer of problems or unusual situations with recommendations for appropriate action. The dental assistant' s work is reviewed on an overall basis by the Administrative Officer for conformity to Dental Service policy and requirements. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Qualifications Required
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. (Narrative responses are not required at this time.) At least 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level that demonstrates the core competencies described at that level. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk(*):
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of instruments, mat! erials and standardized dental procedures used in the specialty of oral! and maxillofacial surgery.
2. Knowledge of anatomy of the oral structures and an understanding of the surgical procedures performed.
- 3. Advanced knowledge Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) standards for clinical and laboratory operations.
- 4. For supervisory positions, ability to lead and/or supervise less experienced dental assistants.
Education: Successful completion of a 1 year dental assistant program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included a course in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality; radiographic techniques; dark room and pr! ocessing techniques; and film mounting; or practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accredited body. Must be currently Certified by Dental Assisting National Board. Must hold a current Radiology Permit. Must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR certified from the American Heart Association.
