The VA Gulf Coast
Veterans Health Care System (VAGCVHCS) is a multi-divisional health care system
based in Biloxi, Mississippi spanning the Gulf Coast to include the following
Community Based Outpatient Clinics i! n Mobile, AL, Pensacola, Ft. Walton Beach,
and Panama City! , Florida. Acute inpatient medical and surgical care, primary,
specialty outpatient care, long-term care, blind rehabilitation, as well as
inpatient and outpatient mental health services are provided at the Biloxi campus.
Over 200,000 veterans reside in our service area. The VAGCVHCS has affiliation
agreements with three medical schools and numerous associated health programs.
We support resident training in cardiology, dermatology, general surgery,
otolaryngology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, radiology, and dental programs, as
well as a general thoracic fellowship. The residents rotate from the University
of South Alabama in Mobile, Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana State
University in New Orleans, and Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.
NOTE: Applicant's education and length of practice (experience) will be
considered by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel in
determining the salary of the appli! cant selected.
Tour of Duty: Mon-Fri, 8:00-4:30.
Travel required occasionally of 10% on a
weekly basis.
Note: This positionÂ's initial duty station is Biloxi,
MS ; however the duty station, based upon the needs of the health care
system, may require the individual to work from other facilities (e.g., Mobile Outpatient Clinic, Alabama; Eglin Outpatient clinic, Florida ; Joint Ambulatory Care Center Pensacola ,
Florida; and Panama City Outpatient Clinics , Florida).
Telework: Telework is not authorized for this
position.
Relocation Expenses: Relocation expenses are
not authorized for this position.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated

Must pass pre-employment examination. DUTIES:
The Staff General
Surgeon maintains professional, technical and administrative knowledge,
competencies and skills to provide effective leadership and direction for the
section and timely and quality responses to patientsÂ' clinical needs and
problems.
In the absence of
the Chief, Surgical Service may act as Acting Chief for the Service. Assists the Chief of Surgery with all aspects of administrative duties to
include: Peer Review, Resident Over Site and Morbidity and
Mortality Conferences. Patients seen and treated r! ange from 18 through
the geriatric years.

He/she maintains high clinical and ethical standards that are carried into
decision-making processes and takes an active role in effective teaching of
residents and medical students and accomplishing the Medical CenterÂ's and the
Surgical ServiceÂ's mission and goals. Promotes
constructive problem resolution in an environment of competing priorities and
promotes the development of health care professionals through counseling,
mentoring, teaching and encouraging self-assessment.
The surgeon complies
with current standards for medical record documentation and residency
supervision and assumes accountability for professional and administrative
activities within the section.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Light lifting (under 15
pounds), light carrying (under 15 pounds), use of fingers, both hands required,
walking (2 hours), standing (8 hours), repeated bending (8! hours), ability for
rapid mental and muscular coordination simulta! neously, near vision correctable
to 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to
20/20, depth perception, hearing (aid permitted), emotional/mental stability,
unusual fatigue factors resulting from long hours on-call, protracted or

irregular hours of work. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Requirements :

  • U.S.
citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit
qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor
of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in
medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • Current, full
and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory,
or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Pre-placement
physical examination.
  • Must be
proficient in written and ! spoken English.
