DUTIES:
The Nursing Assistant will perform duties in the Ambulatory Surgery Outpatient section of the VA Hospital. He/She will assist in a variety of surgical and endoscopy procedures. The Nursing Assistant works with patients exhibiting a variety of physical and/ or behavioral problems. The incumbent collects, measures and tests sterile specimens including wound drainage. Performs complex treatments such as bladder catherizations, irrigations,Tracheostomy care! , sterile dressings, etc. He/She provides for range of motion exercises and interacts with a variety of patients. He/She also functions as a group leader for Reality Orientation, Remotivation, Social Skills Training, etc. Also provides patient care which is appropriate to the cognitive, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of the adult and/or geriatric patient. The incumbent has regular access to printed and electronic files containing sensitive data that must be protected under the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. Citizen: Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens.

English Profienciency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Must pass a physical exam

Preferred Experience for ASOU:
In addition to the basic qualificationre! quirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following! knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be essential for satisfactoryperformance in the position.

1. Excellent interpersonal/observational/communication skills- effectively relates to the public in a courteous andhelpful manner.

2. Cooperative and professional and interaction with co-workers and constructive response to supervision.

3. Ability to work with patients exhibiting a variety of physical and/or behavioral problems.

4. Self-direction and dependability.

5. Process improvement experience preferred.

6. Patient privacy knowledge (HIPAA) preferred.

7. Patient safety protocol knowledge preferred.

8. Knowledge of various surgical and endoscopy procedures experience desired.

9. At least 3 years NA experience is preferred.

10 Current BLS preferred.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS (Experience & Education):
GS-4:
Six months of specialized experience

at the GS-3 level to include nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing or patient care facility or in such work as that of a home health aid.

GS-5:
One year of specialized experience

at the GS-4 level to include nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing or patient care facility or in such work as that of a home health aid.

OR

Education; GS-4 or Higher:
Successful completion of a 2 year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of a Nursing Assistant.

Physical Requirements:
The work involves long periods of moving about the unit. The work requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stre! tching, lifting and repositioning patients or similar activities. The incumbent will be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance and up to 35 pounds frequently. Must be able to transport and transfer patients (e.g. stretcher to wheelchair, bed to stretcher, wheelchair to bed, etc.) safely. The use of correct body mechanics and safe lifting techniques are required.
