You may be required to serve a probationary period DUTIES:
This position is located in the Sterile, Prep, and Decontamination (SPD) section of Office of Patient Care Services at the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
·
Perform decontamination process by
receiving, disassembling, and inspecting for damaged reusable instruments and
equipment; determining correct method of pre-sterilizing; removing soil, blood,
tissue fragments, body fluids, and other gross contaminants by wiping, rinsing,
scrubbing, and use of ! ultrasonic equipment; loading and operating washer
sterilize; and d! etermining type of tray or set to assemble.
·
Perform sterilization, assembly, packaging
and wrapping of items.
·
Receive, store, and control supply item
stock.
·
Participate in mandatory training to ensure
compliance with job expectations and to ensure patient safety.
·
Other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule:
Monday - Friday, rotating shifts 6:00am - 2:30pm, 7:00am -
3:30pm, 8:00am - 4:30pm,
1 0:00am - 6:30pm, 12:00am - 8:30pm, and some after
hours, to include weekends and holidays on-call.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
To qualify for this position, you must meet one of the following

requirements:

  • One (1) year of specialized experience
equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-05) level in Federal Service. Specialized Experience is experience in
processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, ! storing, and
issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. The applicant
must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical
characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of
decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures;
knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer,
ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. (Your resume
must reflect this experience to be qualified for this position) ~OR~
  • Successful completion of one-half year (9
semester hours) of Graduate Education directly related to the work of a Medical
Supply Technician. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your

Equivalent combination of specialized
experience and education to meet the total requirements for the Medical Supply!
Technician position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED - If you do not submit a! copy of your

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: (Narrative responses NOT required) Knowledge of aseptic techniques. Ability to communicate effectively. Knowledge of disassembling and inspecting reusable instruments and equipment. Knowledge of package items and assembling of sets and trays.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work requires long periods of standing, walking,
lifting, stooping, pushing, and stretching during the entire shift. Instrument trays can weigh as much as 25
pounds that must be lifted and carried short distances. The employee regularly pushes loaded carts
weighing several hundred pounds aligning them on tracks leading to the
transport system. The employee must be able to read, write and organize. Tension and stress are induced by the
critica! l nature of producing work results on a pre-established timeframe as
well as in emergent situations. Shifts
can be lengthened by emergency surgery instrumentation needs. On a regular and recurring basis, the employee
alternates between a contaminated environment and a carefully controlled
cleaned environment. In both, the employee
wears special clothing, hair covers, and shoe covers which can be uncomfortably
warm. The employee uses insulated gloves
to remove carts from sterilizers. The
employee is subject to burns from accidentally touching hot items, cuts from
both sterile and contaminated instruments, and dermatitis from frequent contact
with cleaning agents. The hazards of
working around many quantities of sterilizing gases are unknown. The employee often works around body fluids,
mucous, excretions, and bits of tissue, some of which may be foul
smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are
encountered while sterilizing l! aboratory cultures prior to disposal. The work area is noisy due to the! clatter of
metal instruments, rumbling of carts, and operation of pre-sterilizing
equipment.

Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
