Roles & Responsibilities:
The Surgical Scrub Technician performs procedures which render the safest and most effective service to the patient and surgeon involved. As a “scrubb ed†member of the surgical team, it is his/her responsibility to anticipate the needs of the surgeon. He/she passes instruments, sutures, sponges and all other necessary sterile equipment to the operating team.
This job assists in procedures competently and professionally, assures appropriate handling and maintenance of equipment and supplies, and assures availability of equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
Reporting Relationship: Reports to Clinical Coordinator/Administrator
Minimum Qualifications:
- One year OR experience
- Must have competent technical skills.
- Must be flexible, must have dexterity free of limitations.
- Must be able to get along with employees and work with them in a positive and productive manner.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prefer two years’ experience as a Scrub Tech in multiple specialties or an equivalent combination of education and expe rience.
Licenses/Certifications Required:
- ORT/Certified Scrub Technician
- BLS
Job Duties:
- Performs direct patient care duties, including assisting physicians during procedures
- Assists in the day-to-day operations of the department
- Maintains required clinical knowledge, technical skills, equipment, training and credentials.
- Adapts to change in a positive constructive manner
- Ensures cleanliness and/disinfection of endoscopes while maintaining quality control measures
- Ensures sterility of all supplies and instruments during set up of surgical procedures.
- Assists circulating nurse and surgical team in maintaining sterile environment.
- Assists circulating nurse in gathering necessary surgical supplies and equipment.
- Is responsible for doing sponge, needle, and instrument count pre-operatively and intra-operative with the circulating nurse.
- Go wns and gloves surgeons and assistants.
- Assists in keeping physician preference cards accurate/updated.
- Retains all specimens to be sent to pathology, confirming source/name of specimen with surgeon.
- Transports all surgical equipment to appropriate cleaning areas.
- Assists in sterile supply with cleaning and reprocessing of instrument sets.
- Interacts appropriately and effectively with all patients/others regardless of age or ethnic background.
- Uses Standard Universal Precautions, appropriate hand hygiene, personal protective equipment, and safe practices to ensure personal safety and a safe environment.
- Assists with environmental hazard and infection control surveillance and participates in emergency preparedness drills.
- Follows all equipment and safety guidelines and is responsible for knowledgeable use and care of equipment.
- Communicates effectively and courteously with visitors, physicians, and their o ffice staffs, patients, and employees.
- Maintains patient, physician, and employee privacy and confidentiality per policy.
- Maintains designated certifications such as CPR.
- Acts in accordance with the vision, mission, and business philosophy of the Center.
- Complies with Policies and Procedures and adheres to safety guidelines to ensure a safe work and patient care environment.
